Cal Poly Engineering: Where innovation meets education, and the future begins

As a leader in Learn by Doing and innovative collaboration, we can always share the good news about our impact. Still, it’s not very often that we can share a transformational gift that will set a new standard for interdisciplinary education in computing.

The Noyce School of Applied Computing at Cal Poly represents a bold vision for the future of computing education. This groundbreaking development, made possible by an extraordinary $60 million gift from the Robert N. Noyce Trust, marks a significant milestone in our university’s history.

In an era where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, the need for skilled computing professionals has never been greater. By fostering an environment that emphasizes hands-on learning, industry collaboration and cutting-edge research, the Noyce School is poised to address this critical demand and shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy is at the heart of The Noyce School of Applied Computing, but that is a common theme throughout our college, which you’ll see in the continuing pages. We highlight how faculty and students are changing the world through their groundbreaking data science project empowering the global fight against human trafficking and advocates collaborating to showcase one of the richest aquatic habitats on Earth in danger of disappearing. And because health and well-being are important to us, we also highlight the work our college community is doing to advocate for mental health.

As you read this edition of Engineering Advantage, I hope you will celebrate the power of Learn by Doing and the future of Cal Poly engineering. It’s on these pages you will see students engaging in real-world projects that challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills in practical settings, changing the world around them.
